THE ROYAL OAK CONCEPT JOINS THE LEAGUE OF SUPERHEROES

Following the announcement of its long-term partnership with Marvel Entertainment, the Swiss Haute Horlogerie manufacturer Audemars Piguet is pleased to unveil its new Royal Oak Concept “Black Panther” Flying Tourbillon, limited to 250 pieces. Inspired by historic character-themed watches, including those created by Gérald Genta in the 1980s, the Manufacture sought to pay tribute to a new generation of heroes from the powerful MARVEL universe.

To launch this new series, Audemars Piguet has created a Black Panther watch that pays tribute to the family values and the harmonious blend of tradition and technology embodied by the hero. Combining time-honored craftsmanship with futuristic technology, the Royal Oak Concept “Black Panther” Flying Tourbillon highlights the Manufacture’s boundless creativity in the realm of complicated watches. This 42-mm model also embodies the brand’s commitment to forging connections with vastly different cultural worlds, seeking inspiration beyond the realm of Haute Horlogerie and drawing in particular from pop culture, art, and the entertainment industry.

A HIGH-TECH CASE INSPIRED BY VIBRANIUM

The watch’s futuristic design evokes the avant-garde suit worn by the Marvel hero Black Panther. Crafted from titanium, the case is topped with an octagonal bezel and crown in black steel, giving it a high-tech look. These lightweight yet robust materials perfectly complement the ergonomic curve of the 42-mm case, which hugs the shape of the wrist.

Deeply rooted in tradition, the ultra-resistant case features refined hand-finished details. The black ceramic bezel alternates between satin-finished and polished surfaces—a hallmark of Audemars Piguet. The steel case, meanwhile, combines a textured aesthetic with micro-bead-blasted surfaces adjacent to polished titanium inserts. Satin-finished hexagonal steel screws secure the bezel to the case and reinforce the watch’s two-tone look, while the visible purple gasket adds a bold splash of color.

A DIAL WITH A HEROIC DESIGN

At 6 o’clock, the dial features a flying tourbillon alongside the silhouette of the Marvel hero Black Panther, crafted in stainless steel and hand-painted.

To create, assemble, and integrate the character onto the movement, new specialized tools had to be developed. The figure’s silhouette and form were first cut from a white gold disc using a CNC machine. To leave sufficient space for the movement’s components, numerous recesses were created beneath the figure of Black Panther, while ensuring sufficient rigidity to prevent deformation and achieve optimal visual rendering The texture of the hero’s costume was laser-cut before being meticulously engraved by hand.
